Verrucae: Understanding Your Treatment Options

Spotted a small, rough patch on your foot that might be a verruca?

You're not alone - these stubborn little visitors are incredibly common, but that doesn't mean you have to live with them.

At Kenilworth Footcare, we offer multiple proven treatments to tackle verrucae effectively.

What Exactly Is a Verruca?

A verruca is essentially a wart on the foot caused by the HPV virus.

Think of it as an uninvited guest that makes itself at home in the outer layers of your skin.

While some might disappear on their own, many need a helping hand - especially if they're causing discomfort or spreading.

Our Assessment Approach

Before diving into treatment, we'll:

- Confirm that what you're dealing with is definitely a verruca

- Assess its size, location, and how long you've had it

- Consider your overall health and lifestyle

- Discuss any previous treatments you've tried

In fact, we offer a Verruca Assessment appointment to do just that.

Your Treatment Options

We're proud to offer four different treatment approaches, because we know that what works brilliantly for one person might not be the best choice for another.

Here's what's available:

Swift Microwave Therapy

Swift uses precisely controlled microwave energy to stimulate your body's own immune response. Think of it as waking up your immune system to tackle the virus naturally.

K-Laser Therapy

Using specific wavelengths of light, K-Laser treatment helps to destroy the virus while promoting healing. It's particularly effective for small and/or superficial verrucas

Verrutop

A gentle chemical treatment that targets the verruca directly. It's particularly effective for children and can resolve them in just a few applications.

Needling

For those stubborn cases, needling (performed under local anaesthetic) can be an excellent option. It works by breaking down the verruca and triggering your immune system to fight the virus.

Frequently Asked Questions About Verrucae

How do I know if I have a verruca?

Verrucae typically appear as small, rough growths on the soles of your feet, often with tiny black dots in the centre. However, it's best to get a professional diagnosis as other conditions can look similar.

Which treatment is best?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer! We offer four different treatments (Swift microwave therapy, K-Laser, Verrutop, and needling) because different verrucae respond better to different approaches. During your consultation, we'll help you choose the most suitable treatment for your specific case.

How long does a treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the method chosen. Swift treatments typically take just a few minutes, while other treatments might take 15-30 minutes. We'll give you a precise timeline during your consultation.

Is verruca treatment painful?

Most patients find our treatments very tolerable. With Swift therapy, you might feel a short, sharp heating sensation. For needling treatment, we use local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies depending on the size and stubbornness of your verruca, plus which treatment we're using. Some verrucae clear up after just 1-2 treatments, while others might need a series of sessions.

Can I swim/go to the gym after treatment?

This depends on which treatment you've had. We'll give you specific aftercare advice, but generally, you can return to normal activities quite quickly with most of our treatment options.

Will my verruca spread?

Verrucae can spread if left untreated, it partly depends on which strain of the virus you have. Some will spread over a larger area, forming a mosaic pattern, but will stay more superficial. Others can remain as single lesions, but can get quite deep, especially if they're on a pressure point. We suggest treating your verruca if it is causing discomfort, spreading or growing.

Are verrucae contagious?

It used to be thought that verrucae were spread from direct contact in places like swimming pools. However, it is now known the virus that causes verrucae (HPV) can form part of the natural flora and fauna of the skin biome. If the delicate balance of the biome is upset or the HPV has a chance to invade the epidermis (e.g. in a break in the skin, or on soft, moist skin), then a verruca may form.
