Understanding and Treating Corns

Does every step feel like you're walking on a tiny pebble? That's often how patients describe the discomfort of corns - those small but mighty troublemakers that can make walking a real challenge.

While they might look insignificant, corns can have a big impact on your daily comfort and mobility.

What Actually Is a Corn?

Think of a corn as your body's overzealous attempt at protection.

Unlike their cousin, hard skin, corns are smaller, more focused areas of thickened skin with a dense center.

They typically appear on the tops and sides of toes, or on the balls of your feet - basically, anywhere that experiences repeated pressure or friction.

Why Do Corns Develop?

Imagine wearing a pair of shoes that rub slightly in one spot. Day after day, this tiny friction point encourages your skin to toughen up for protection.

Before you know it, you've got a corn!

Common culprits include:

- Those gorgeous but not-so-foot-friendly shoes

- Changes in the way you walk (perhaps compensating for other foot issues)

- The natural shape of your feet and toes

- Even certain activities that put repeated pressure on specific areas

The treatment and the cure

Our Gentle Approach to Treatment

At Kenilworth Footcare, we don't just remove the corn and send you on your way. We take time to understand why it developed in the first place.

Our treatment includes: First, a thorough assessment to identify what's causing your corn. Then, gentle removal using professional techniques that prioritise your comfort. For longer-lasting results, we often recommend Curacorn - an innovative treatment that helps prevent the corn from returning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corns

What's the difference between a corn and hard skin?

While both are areas of thickened skin, corns are smaller and more focused, with a dense center. They typically form on toes or pressure points, while hard skin (callus) covers larger areas. Corns can be more painful because of this concentrated pressure point.

How long does corn removal take?

Your first appointment will be around 45 minutes as we'll do a full foot assessment first. The actual corn removal is quick and gentle, usually taking about 15-20 minutes within that appointment.

Is corn removal painful?

Not at all! Our podiatrists are highly skilled at gentle corn removal. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the treatment is and experience immediate relief afterward.

Will my corn come back?

If the pressure that caused the corn continues (like from certain shoes), it might return. However, we'll help you understand what's causing your corn and recommend ways to prevent it recurring. Our Curacorn treatment also offers longer-lasting relief.

What's Curacorn and how does it work?

Curacorn is a special treatment we offer that helps prevent corns from returning. High strength hyaluronic acid is injected below the corn, providing a cushion between the pressure point on the surface and the underlying bone. It works differently from standard corn removal by addressing the underlying cause rather than just removing the corn. We offer a FREE Curacorn Assessment to assess your suitability for the treatment and to talk you through the process before you decide if it's for you.

Can I treat corns at home?

While there are over-the-counter treatments available, we don't recommend self-treatment, especially with medicated corn plasters as these can damage healthy skin. Professional treatment is safer and more effective.

Should I keep my corn covered?

We'll advise you about this during your appointment. Sometimes, protective padding can help reduce pressure while you're addressing the underlying cause, but it's important to use the right type of padding in the right way.

What shoes should I wear after treatment?

We recommend wearing comfortable, roomy shoes to your appointment. After treatment, we'll give you specific advice about footwear to help prevent your corns from returning.
