How to navigate the confusing world of foot orthotics

It is not uncommon for a new patient to arrive with a bag full of various insoles they have purchased from the local pharmacy or from the internet.  The results will have been varied – some may have caused further pain, others will have worked for a while and then lost their benefit.  The lucky few will have succeeded in making their everyday footwear more comfortable.

So how do you avoid your orthotics being hit and miss, when the prices range from just a few pounds to several hundred?  Read on to find out what works best for your type of feet.

Cushioning and comfort

A lack of fatty padding under the ball of the foot can lead to discomfort at every step. This happens as the natural layer of fat under the skin becomes thinner or is displaced.  It tends to be more common in women, as wearing high heels places more pressure through the forefoot.  In turn this pushes away the padding from its natural position to sit underneath the toes. Hard skin then forms to protect the joints.  If you suffer from painful corns, this is one of the prime reasons.

Our Skippies insoles offer an excellent value solution. The unique material cushions and absorbs shock as the foot hits the ground, springing back to its original thickness within a fraction of a second.  Add to this an antimicrobial agent which combats Athlete’s Foot, and washability, this insole is a real winner.  One size fits all – and your podiatrist is happy to cut to size.

Tired, aching feet?

Many of us are walking more these days, and whilst great for our overall fitness, the legacy can often be fatigue and troublesome aches and pains.  You may have noticed your foot getting flatter over time (look at your wet footprint on the bathroom floor to check your arch) or the niggle of heel pain during your daily walks.  If this is the case, then you may benefit from a simple insole. Our off-the-shelf Slimflex insoles (in low or medium density) can help to stop the heel fat pad from shifting on impact and offer some basic arch support.  An excellent option for minor foot problems, these can be used in different types of footwear (trainers and walking boots are ideal). Holding the foot in a more supported position, these are great for uncomplicated flat feet and general aches and pains.    Available in full length or 3/4 size to fit slimmer footwear, these come in a variety of sizes from XSmall to XX-Large.  Your podiatrist will be happy to advise you if these are generally suitable for your problem. Top Tip – need to wear wellies to walk the dog?  Slimflex can fit snugly into your boots, improving your comfort and slowing down longer term joint damage.

(Slimflex Simple Orthotics £20 per pair)

Tried everything, but your feet still aren’t happy?

Foot problems are complex and some people suffer for years without getting to the root cause, trying many different solutions.  You may have stood in the pharmacy looking at the range of gel heel pads, diabetic insoles, arch supports, toe props and more; feeling confused.  Which solution for which problem – and what if there’s more than one issue?  Sometimes, off-the-shelf just won’t do. Problems such as bunions, toenails which go black and fall off regularly (when you haven’t dropped something heavy on them) and long-standing tendon problems will need more investigation.  A comprehensive biomechanical assessment leading to the prescription of a custom-made orthotic will pay dividends.   We can use the latest technology to find out which areas of your feet take the most pressure with our brand new Gait &  Motion system (link for details) and create a perfect impression of your feet with our 3D scan technology.  Your orthotics will fit like a glove, taking into account any differences between right and left.  Expect to see an improvement in the build-up of hard skin under the foot, and an on-going improvement in your symptoms.  Top Tip – benefit from our 25% discount for a second pair tailored to your sport: skiing, golf, cycling or for your safety boots.

(Phits Orthotics package with Gait & Motion Technology assessment £295, (existing customers only)  New clients require an initial consultation)
